Why fabric sells so well on live video

In Nigeria, a family or a group of friends often chooses one fabric for a wedding, a naming ceremony or an owambe party: the aso-ebi. In Ghana, families pick matching fabrics and kente for weddings, funerals and outdoorings. These purchases have three things in common:

  • A fixed date: the fabric must arrive in time for the tailor to sew it before the event.
  • Group buying: one organiser often orders for ten, twenty or more people.
  • Colour matters: buyers want to see the real shade, shine and texture before paying.

Photos often fail on that last point. On a live video, you can show the fabric moving, in daylight and indoors, and answer questions straight away. That is why live shopping works so well for fabric sellers.

Preparing a fabric live

Pick one theme per live

"Wedding aso-ebi colours", "new ankara prints", "lace for owambe": a clear theme brings the right viewers. Announce the date and time a few days before so that group organisers can watch together.

Show the real colour

Present each fabric near a window, then indoors, close up for the texture and from a distance for the overall look. Stretch it, drape it and say what it is made of. Our guide to selling wax and African fabrics live has more presentation tips.

Suggest complete looks

Show the fabric with matching gele, beads, bags or shoes if you sell them. Organisers often want to settle the whole group look in one place.

Handling group orders

  1. Check stock first: a group needs enough fabric from the same batch, so the colour matches for everyone.
  2. Work with one organiser: agree the quantity, yards per person and delivery date with one contact person.
  3. Put it in writing: confirm every group order with a clear summary.
  4. Reserve the quantity: once the order is confirmed, take it out of available stock so you do not sell it twice during the live. See our guide to managing stock during a live.

Deadlines: the golden rule

A late aso-ebi cannot be fixed after the event. State your delivery times clearly in every live and remind viewers to order early: "If your wedding is in four weeks, order now so your tailor has time." Only promise what you can deliver.

Structure your live

A simple rhythm works well: welcome and theme, three to five fabrics presented in detail, a reminder of prices and how to order, questions, then a last call. For a minute-by-minute plan, use our live selling script.

FAQ

How do I handle deposits for group orders?

Set your rule before the live and say it clearly: deposit amount, balance date and what happens if the order is cancelled. A simple written rule avoids misunderstandings.

Should I offer tailoring?

It is not required, since many customers have their own tailor. If you offer it, make sure you can meet the deadlines you announce.

How many fabrics should I show per live?

Fewer is better: three to five fabrics shown in detail, with all available colours, work better than a long list.

How do customers pay?

Directly in the app during the live, with their usual online payment methods. Read more on our live shopping in Nigeria and live shopping in Ghana pages.
