Selling live and it is not working? The problem is almost always one of these
Live shopping has its own specific failure modes, and they are almost entirely avoidable. The good news: the mistakes that kill sales are few, easy to identify, and fixable in a single session. Here are the ten, ranked by how often they show up among sellers starting out.
1. Presenting too many products
Symptom : you list 20 items, the audience drifts off, nobody buys.
Why it fails : every product dilutes attention. In 30 minutes with 15 references you cannot present more than three properly.
The fix : 3 to 5 products maximum per session. Go deep on each instead of skimming fifteen. A live is a highlight, not a catalog.
2. Not showing the product in action
Symptom : you describe the product out loud, but it stays off camera or in its packaging.
Why it fails : live shopping sells on demonstration. A spoken description never replaces the object in hand, in motion, from every angle.
The fix : take the product out, switch it on, plug it in, use it. Show the material, the texture, the real size. If the viewer can picture themselves using it, they buy.
3. Announcing the price before the value
Symptom : you drop the price in the first seconds, before you have built any value.
Why it fails : a price stated too early becomes a comparison point, not an opportunity. The customer arbitrates instead of converting.
The fix : reverse the order. Value first (demonstration, benefits, quality), then price, then urgency. That is the structure of the minute-by-minute frame.
4. Ignoring objections live
Symptom : someone asks a question in the chat, you do not answer, and the conversation dies.
Why it fails : an unaddressed objection becomes doubt, and unresolved doubt becomes a silent exit. Buyers do not storm off — they just leave without a word.
The fix : read the chat continuously and voice the three main objections even if nobody has asked yet. Payment, delivery, trust: prepare your answers. Our guide on payment, delivery and trust gives you the exact wording.
5.Dropping your price live
Symptom : a viewer hesitates and you immediately reduce.
Why it fails : you break the price for everyone, including those about to buy at full price. You lose on both segments.
The fix : never concede on price. Offer the mid-range option, a non-price bonus (free delivery, a gift), or a deadline. Our guide to pricing strategy in live shopping covers the levers that do not destroy your margin.
6. Inventing fake limited stock
Symptom : "only 3 left" repeated on a stock of 200.
Why it fails : it works once, and then you have priced your own word. Customers remember, and trust is lost for good — with a knock-on effect on every stream that follows.
The fix : urgency must be real. A real limited batch, a real price, a real deadline. Credibility is an asset; one lie destroys it faster than it earns.
7. Burying the delivery cost
Symptom : you announce delivery fees at the very end, or after the order.
Why it fails : surprise fees are the number one cause of cart abandonment. The customer was ready to pay for the product, not for the surcharge they discover at checkout.
The fix : state the fees before the price, in the same sentence. "22,000 FCFA, 1,000 delivery in Abidjan." Transparency costs nothing and increases conversion.
8. Not announcing the next session
Symptom : your live ends with "thanks, see you soon", with no date or time.
Why it fails : you lose an audience that actually liked the stream. The closing appointment is one of the highest-return gestures there is: it turns a casual viewer into a follower.
The fix : always close on a specific appointment — "same time Thursday, new arrivals". And explicitly invite people to turn on notifications. The formats that build loyalty all start here.
9. Selling or launching without a complete product listing
Symptom : you talk about an item that has no listing in your store.
Why it fails : the viewer who wants to buy right now finds nothing to buy. The intent is lost within seconds, and the next session will not recover it.
The fix : every product shown live must exist, be purchasable and be deliverable before the live starts. A live stream amplifies everything — including catalog mistakes.
10. Announcing the stream to the wrong people
Symptom : your live starts at 6pm and you only told your friends.
Why it fails : even excellent content fails without an audience. Most of the effort goes into the invitation, not the production.
The fix : announce the day before (WhatsApp status, story, post), then remind 30 minutes ahead with a short message and a precise time. Live content does not get a second airing.
How to work out which of these is your problem
A quick diagnosis, in order:
- Fewer than 5 viewers ? → Problem 10 (promotion). You do not have a content problem or a pricing problem.
- Plenty of viewers, no purchases ? → Problems 1, 2, 3, 4. Your content is not strong or clear enough.
- Products shown but no orders ? → Problems 3, 4, 5, 7. Price, objections or fees are blocking conversion.
- Sales, then bad reviews ? → Problems 6 and 9. The trust you promised was not kept at delivery.

FAQ: live shopping mistakes
Why are my live streams generating no sales?
In order of frequency: not enough viewers (a promotion problem), too many products presented, the product never actually shown in action, or unaddressed objections. Run the diagnosis above before changing anything — most of the time the problem is #2 or #10, not price.
How many products should I present in a live?
Between 3 and 5. Seven at most on a long session. Beyond that you cannot demonstrate each item properly and purchase intent dilutes.
Should I show the real price at the start of the live?
No. Announce the value first, the price after. A price stated too early becomes a comparison point. The customer needs to understand the value before they see the number.
How do you retain an audience while selling live?
The first brake is always trust, not price. Live shopping answers it directly by showing the real product and enabling instant Mobile Money payment. The second brake is delivery: announce your fees and delays before the order, and offer pickup. Our guide on delivery and logistics in West Africa covers this in depth.
